Retouching Services for Construction-phase Photos

Construction photos used to document site conditions and progress toward completion are never retouched; that is, nothing is ever done to alter the content of photographs whose purpose is to document the progress of the job. You can read more in this blog post.

However, when necessary, I think retouching is acceptable on photos that will be used for
marketing purposes.

These samples were taken just before the project was turned over by the GC. It was a typical punch-list day; there was a little clutter to work around, the interior was being given it's final cleaning before turnover, and window treatments were being installed on the day these photos were taken.

The GC was responsible for the building and curbs and for paving a portion of the parking lot. Landscaping was to be done buy the owner, and the rest of the parking lot was to be paved by others on an adjacent construction site. In this situation, the enhancements made to the photos simply add a more-finished appearance. The retouching here turns a "documentation" photo (the Before version) into a "marketing" photo (the After version) without waiting for a few interior punch-list items to be completed, or for the landscaper and paving crew to finish.

In these samples I have adjusted color balance and exposure, "power-washed" and “finish-paved” the parking lot, “hauled away” construction debris, “planted” grass, eliminated window reflections and improved the view, toned down reflections in a wall-mounted monitor, removed temporary construction features, “installed” vinyl baseboard, “washed” windows, “touched up” some paint, corrected perspective distortion, enhanced details, "turned on" ceiling can lights and more, all while maintaining the integrity of the project.

As noted above, I don't and won't make these kinds of changes to photos that document the progress toward completion of a project. These services are available only for photos that will be used for marketing purposes.
